Yuquan Mountain Boutique Hotel, Beijing

Located in Haidian District, Beijing, adjacent to Summer Palace on the east, and Yuquan Mountain on the Northwest. Due to its sensitivity of geographical location, we drew lessons from the principles of traditional Chinese architecture, making the central axis echo with Yufeng Pagoda (Jade Peak Pagoda) on Yuquan Mountain, and employing a fan-shaped form to acquire connection with Summer Palace. Along with the deepening of modern urbanization, previous resources and architectures have to be reallocated. The eight well-known scenic places in old Beijing have been now gradually degraded; “Yuquan Chuihong (Rainbow Hanging over the Jade Spring)", had even died out due to over-use of groundwater. We designed a landscape fountain for "artificial Chuihong (hanging rainbow)" at the end of the axis, retrieving the classic story while at the same time reminding people to rethink the deep relationship between man and environment.
